Our priorities

The places we live, learn and work play a huge role in how healthy we are. By enhancing and transforming these, we can make Tāmaki Makaurau a healthier place to call home.

Our vision for Auckland

Auckland now

Many of our neighbourhoods seem to be stacked against us. They are saturated with fast food and its advertising. There are too many cars, and it’s too hard to get to places walking or biking. Our leisure, our commute and workplaces all discourage physical activity.

    • Half of Aucklanders are not active enough

    • Half of short trips made by car could be walked in 20 minutes.

    • Poor neighbourhoods are twice as likely to have more fast food outlets than fruit and vege shops nearby

    • Junk food dominates what’s available at sports games

    • Fast food outlets are clustered within walking distance of schools

    • 55% of Auckland kids get driven to school

    • 83% of Aucklanders drive to work

    • Aucklanders spend 6 hours a day sitting at work

What Auckland could look like

We can have neighbourhoods where a nutritious diet is the norm and physical activity is made easy for everyone. We can all improve our local environment so its active and healthy.

    • Better urban environments increase activity by 1/3rd

    • Walking, cycling or using public transport keeps you a healthy weight

    • Neighbourhoods have access to good affordable food

    • Kids can live free from junk food marketing

    • Kitchens and tuckshops have good food

    • Safe routes to walk or cycle to school

    • Public transport and cycling are supported

    • Employers invest in a healthy workforce
