Tips and tricks for fussy eaters

Getting used to new food can be hard for children. But with a few little tricks we can get all tamariki eating more nutritious kai. The Heart Foundation recommends the following:

  • Offer new foods many times – it is important that children are presented with food they are unfamiliar with often. They will often not try a new food the first time it is presented to them, but with exposure kids may become more willing to give things a go and get used to new flavours.

  • Vegetables – if you are worried about the intake of vegetables children are getting, try blending a portion of the veggies provided into sauces, as well as providing a small serving on the side. In this way you can ensure that children are getting the nutrients they need.

  • Role model healthy eating behaviour – if you have enough food, have someone sit and eat with the children. If children see you making healthy food choices and eating the same food as them, they will be more likely to do the same.

  • Make mealtimes fun!

For leftovers:

If you have unused food items left over at the end of the week, you can use them to explore new tasty recipes:

  • Chickpeas – leftover chickpeas can be blended up with a little oil and turned into hummus and served as a side. Chickpeas are an important source of protein.

  • Frozen vegetables – leftover frozen vegetables can be finely chopped or blended, mixed with eggs, flour and seasonings and turned into veggie patties. These could be a tasty, healthy addition to lunches or morning / afternoon tea.
