Call for the inclusion of protected cycleways in Auckland Transport’s ‘Better journeys on Green Lane West’ project

Healthy Auckland Together Transport Action Group Co-Chairs Dr Jamie Hosking and Professor Alistair Woodward have written to Auckland Transport, calling for the inclusion of protected cycleways in it’s ‘Better journeys on Green Lane West’ project.

Green Lane West is identified as a strategic route for cycling and micromobility in Auckland Transport's planning. This indicates a need for high-quality cycle infrastructure. In addition, Green Lane West is located in an area where cycle infrastructure is currently very limited, so providing quality cycle infrastructure in this project is particularly important.

However, the current Green Lane West proposal contains a mixture of painted cycle lanes for some stretches of Green Lane West, and no cycle lanes at all for other stretches. This is not consistent with Auckland Transport's design guidance for a road with high traffic volumes and a 50 km/h speed limit. In this setting, Auckland Transport's design guidance says that protected cycle lanes are most appropriate.

Healthy Auckland Together is therefore calling for Auckland Transport to:

  • replace the planned painted cycle lanes with protected cycle lanes, as in the earlier plans developed by Auckland Transport.

  • extend protected cycle infrastructure westward to St Andrews Rd.
